Parable of the Prodigal Son
Luke 15:12-32
Applying this parable to our world, do you see the parallels? Both of these sons were sinners who rebelled against their father. The first was overt, blatant, and unashamed; the second was a hypocrite who was determined to earn the favor he desired. One was brought to his senses and humbled, while the other remained indifferent and unrepentant. One returned to the Father with a new heart and a new desire to do so, while the other remained stubbornly proud and estranged from the Father, demanding that the Father come to him. One is reinstated to sonship despite deserving judgment, while the other is excluded from the family celebration despite expecting to be rewarded for his diligent service. Jesus teaches this parable to illustrate not only what God will rejoice over in the return of the lost, Jesus also explains why the Pharisees refuse to accept his message. Why did Jesus turn his back on them and leave them on the outside looking in, and why did the poor, destitute sinners and tax collectors who did hear bring joy to heaven? Luke includes Chapter 15 to explain how and why Jesus rejects the religious establishment and finds a receptive audience among the lowest members of society. Luke makes a significant shift at the end of Chapter 15 after providing a clear explanation for why the Pharisees rejected Jesus. He then begins a lengthy series of chapters that focus almost exclusively on the disciples and his preparation for their ministry. This is a wonderful series of chapters on how we should approach our earthly ministry.
Speaker:
A Servant Is Humble
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:3-8)
