Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Luke 18:9-14
The objective of comparison is always to find fault with others so that they can feel superior by comparison. Judgmental individuals who rely on their own virtue to gain God's favor would naturally develop a judgmental attitude toward others. Jesus concludes that, for God to exalt us, we must be willing to recognize and admit our unworthiness before him. The Gospel of Luke is the culmination of the teaching recorded by Luke during Jesus' journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. This chapter addresses the question of faith as the only way to be saved.
Jesus provides the disciples with the answer to the dilemma he had just highlighted. Faith is essential for connection with God, but faith will not reign on earth when Jesus returns. The remedy is to surrender confidence in ourselves and place all confidence in God via His Son.
Speaker:
A Servant Is Humble
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:3-8)
